GED Math Practice Test
Updated October 27, 2026
GED Mathematical Reasoning takes 115 minutes. It covers quantitative problem solving (numbers, percents, ratios, area and volume) and algebraic problem solving (equations, inequalities, graphs and functions). You get a formula sheet, and an on-screen TI-30XS calculator is available for most questions. Try the free questions below. Each answer shows the steps.
What the formula sheet gives you
The formula sheet includes the area and perimeter formulas for common shapes, surface area and volume formulas, the slope and slope-intercept formulas, the Pythagorean theorem and the quadratic formula. You don’t have to memorize those, but you do need to know when to use each one.

-
A phone plan costs $35 a month plus $0.10 per text. Which expression gives the monthly cost for t texts?Answer: BThe $35 is charged once a month, and $0.10 is added for each text, so the cost is 35 + 0.10t.
-
A store raises the price of a $60 jacket by 15%. What is the new price?Answer: A15% of $60 is 0.15 × 60 = $9. The new price is $60 + $9 = $69.
-
Solve: 3(x − 2) = 18Answer: CDivide both sides by 3: x − 2 = 6. Add 2: x = 8.
-
What is the volume of a rectangular box 4 inches long, 3 inches wide and 5 inches tall?Answer: BVolume of a rectangular prism = length × width × height = 4 × 3 × 5 = 60 cubic inches.
-
What is the slope of the line y = −2x + 7?Answer: DIn slope-intercept form, y = mx + b, the slope is m. Here m = −2, and 7 is the y-intercept.
-
Which value of x satisfies the inequality 2x + 3 > 11?Answer: DSubtract 3: 2x > 8. Divide by 2: x > 4. Of the choices, only 5 is greater than 4.
-
The scores on four quizzes are 82, 90, 76 and 88. What score is needed on a fifth quiz for an average of 85?Answer: BAn average of 85 over 5 quizzes needs a total of 85 × 5 = 425. The first four add up to 336, so the fifth score must be 425 − 336 = 89.
-
What is 3/5 written as a percent?Answer: C3 ÷ 5 = 0.6, which is 60%.
-
A circle has a diameter of 10 inches. What is its circumference? (Use π ≈ 3.14.)Answer: BCircumference = π × diameter = 3.14 × 10 = 31.4 inches.
-
Evaluate 2x² − 3x when x = 4.Answer: A2(4²) − 3(4) = 2(16) − 12 = 32 − 12 = 20.
-
Which equation describes a line with a slope of 3 and a y-intercept of −2?Answer: DSlope-intercept form is y = mx + b, so m = 3 and b = −2 gives y = 3x − 2.
-
Factor x² + 5x + 6.Answer: BFind two numbers that multiply to 6 and add to 5: 2 and 3. So x² + 5x + 6 = (x + 2)(x + 3).
-
A recipe calls for 2 cups of flour to make 24 cookies. How much flour is needed for 60 cookies?Answer: CSet up a proportion: 2/24 = x/60. Cross-multiply: 24x = 120, so x = 5 cups.
-
A right triangle has a hypotenuse of 13 and one leg of 5. How long is the other leg?Answer: CUsing the Pythagorean theorem: 5² + b² = 13², so 25 + b² = 169, b² = 144, b = 12.
-
The data set 4, 7, 7, 9, 13 has which mode?Answer: AThe mode is the value that appears most often. 7 appears twice.
-
A cylinder has a radius of 3 cm and a height of 10 cm. What is its volume? (Use π ≈ 3.14.)Answer: CVolume of a cylinder = πr²h = 3.14 × 9 × 10 = 282.6 cubic centimeters.
Tips
Read each question for what it actually asks: an area or a perimeter, a total or a difference. Use the calculator for arithmetic so you can focus on setting up the problem, and check that your answer is reasonable.
